The Reality of Job Search in 2025

In my last blog, Beyond the CV: Three Languages You Must Master, I wrote about the skills every ambitious hotelier needs: technical expertise, human skills, and strategic thinking. While exploring these, one thing became crystal clear: the biggest struggle isn’t learning skills—it’s the actual job search.

Most people underestimate what job searching really takes. They think it’s about polishing a resume, applying online, and waiting for interviews. The truth is harsher: it often takes three to six months, and during that time, your patience, confidence, and even self-worth are tested.

You will feel invisible. You will second-guess every word on your resume. You will refresh your inbox ten times a day, hoping for a response. Meanwhile, LinkedIn will taunt you with announcements of new jobs, making you feel like you’re falling behind.

This is the side nobody prepares you for. Then you come across Youtubers and Career Coaches with the promise of finding You a job as long you purchase their courses or participate in a free webinar.

Why Job Search Feels So Hard

Let’s be blunt. Most candidates focus too much on the wrong things: endless online applications, obsessively tweaking resumes, rehearsing interview answers. But: Applications are crowded. Dozens or hundreds apply to the same role. Resumes are misused and C.V.s do not make it beyond the ATS scan and are never seen by a human.

Too often, resumes read like history books instead of sales pitches. Focus is missing. Many candidates apply for everything, looking desperate rather than strategic. If you rely only on these short-term tactics, burnout comes quickly.

The system is not designed to reward passive applicants. It will benefit those who can sell themselves. And more importantly, younger recruiters do not possess the experience and finesse it takes to filter out the right candidate.

The Emotional Cost

Every rejection chips away a little piece of confidence. Every silence feels personal. Frustration grows. Many candidates carry that bitterness into interviews, and hiring managers sense it immediately. Older ones understand it, younger ones tend to discriminate instantly. Fewer offers follow, creating a vicious cycle.Preparation isn’t just about your resume—it’s about your overall approach and your mindset on jobsearch.

The Shift That Changes Everything

Stop thinking of yourself as an applicant. Start thinking of yourself as a solution. Companies hire people who solve problems, not just tell stories. Once you clarify the role and industry you want, opportunities multiply. Focus doesn’t limit you—it helps you to find and attracts the right recruiters and companies.

How to Flip the Script

Instead of chasing every opening, create a strategy where companies discover you: Be visible. Optimize LinkedIn, share expertise, show value. Build relationships. Join networks, attend events, connect with insiders. Many roles are filled before posting. Plant seeds. Small personal branding efforts—posts, talks, comments—keep working long after you’ve moved on. Combine clarity, visibility, and relationships, and you stop being just another applicant. Recruiters start reaching out. That’s when the job search becomes shorter, smoother, and even rewarding.
