A true story…
The sprawling Grand Hotel, with its marble floors and shimmering chandeliers, was where Emy and Claudia first crossed paths. Emy had just completed a three-year apprenticeship, and Claudia, fresh from the prestigious halls of a well-known hotel management school, both young women stood on the precipice of their careers, eyes gleaming with dreams of international adventure and success. Yet, their journeys, though they started side by side, would take very different courses.

With her auburn hair and fierce green eyes, Emy approached her career with the precision of a general plotting a campaign. From the outset, she set her sights high, aiming to become a department manager within four years and to secure an international position abroad soon after. She meticulously wrote down each goal, her ambitions as clear as the dawn breaking over the horizon, just as her mentor had advised her.
Dark-haired and equally bright-eyed, Claudia harbored similar dreams of working in the international hotel industry. Yet, her aspirations were nebulous, unanchored by the firm resolve that guided Emy. She was content with her job and trusted that things would develop by default in the right direction. She floated through her days at the Grand Lux, doing her job and performing the tasks related to her in a professional manner. However, her once fiery enthusiasm eventually began to gradually dim like a candle in the wind and expecting that her career would automatically move forward.
Emy took the initiative from the start. She volunteered for new projects, suggesting improvements that soon became the talk of the staff. Her ideas for enhancing the guest check-in process, a seemingly mundane task, boosted efficiency and guest satisfaction. Emy didn’t wait for opportunities to knock; she built the door herself. She reached out to the hotel’s international branches, and her letters and emails are a testament to her unyielding drive to work abroad. Creating slowly an international network of contacts was one of her primary goals.

‘
Claudia, in contrast, missed several opportunities that could have propelled her career forward. She waited passively for tasks to be assigned, never stepping beyond her job description. Opportunities passed her by like ships in the night, unnoticed and untapped. Her dream of working internationally remained just that—a distant fantasy, never backed by the concrete actions needed to make it a reality. She could have taken steps and specific action to set her on that path. She attended career fairs and listened to speakers about global opportunities but failed to make the connections or take the steps required to make her dream a reality.
Just like Emily, Claudia had a seasoned mentor who could have opened doors to new prospects and experiences. However, while Emily maintained a strong relationship with her mentor, Claudia allowed theirs to fade. She didn’t follow up after their initial conversations, missing the chance to deepen that connection. This led to the loss of what could have been an excellent learning experience, a regrettable missed opportunity. Instead of nurturing the mentor relationship and turning it into a catalyst for growth, she allowed it to wither away, leaving her without the guidance or contacts that could have transformed her career. By failing to act, Claudia let potential milestones in her professional journey slip through her fingers, remaining stuck where she began, her ambitions unrealized.

Emy faced the formidable Catering Manager Mr. Grayson with a warrior’s heart. When an event she planned went awry, she didn’t crumple. Instead, she scrutinized every detail, seeking feedback and applying the lessons learned to future endeavours. Each setback was a stepping stone, her resolve hardening with each challenge. Her resilience and positive attitude were crucial to her success and soon the Catering Manager assigned more and more responsibility to her.
Claudia, however, found herself adrift in Mr. Grayson’s tempest. A similar setback left her shattered, her confidence eroded by his biting words. She shrank from responsibilities, her resilience dwindling under his relentless gaze and as such she began to self-create a negative work envrionment for herself. Mr. Grayson would not assign special tasks to her, but instead went straight to Emily.

Emy’s hunger for knowledge was insatiable. She signed up for online courses, attended industry seminars, and read voraciously. The hotel management invested in her by sending her to seminars and even sponsored a 3 week course with a famous US Hotel school. Her commitment to continued learning was a blazing torch lighting her path. She also began studying an additional language, preparing for the day she would step into the international arena. This is a prime example of the importance of learning in career advancement.
Claudia’s approach could have been more timely at best. She enrolled in a course or two but needed more consistency to keep pace with the rapidly evolving industry. She was a relic in a world that moved swiftly, further hampered by Mr. Grayson’s lack of encouragement. A prime example of the neglecting to take responsibility for one’s own learning and development in career growth. What she was really lacking was a solit strategy and a good mentor to serve as a guide and also as a motivational support.

Emy built a network as firm and supportive as the finest silk. She connected with colleagues, sought out an international new mentor, and joined industry associations. She didn’t just take; she gave back, guiding new interns and becoming quite popular. Her network became an unassailable fortress, offering support and opening doors to international opportunities. This is a testament to the power of networking in one’s career growth.
Claudia, in contrast, remained isolated. She worked alone, missing the chance to learn from others and expand her horizons. Her potential went unseen, especially by Mr. Grayson, who provided no support or recognition.

Emy’s work ethic was unmatched. She consistently delivered excellence, often going beyond what was required. Her dedication was evident, and recognition followed. She rose above Mr. Grayson’s toxicity by focusing on her work, earning the respect of her peers and superiors alike. Her efforts culminated in a coveted opportunity: a position at the hotel’s international branch in Paris. Her dream of working abroad had come to fruition, a testament to her relentless ambition.
Claudia, however, did only what was required. Her work was adequate but never exceptional. Without the drive to excel, her career stagnated. Her manager’s negativity towards her further eroded her motivation, trapping her in a mediocrity cycle. International opportunities eluded her, and her dream slipped further into the shadows. Instead of seeking support or advise and making a serious effort to improve the situation, she continued self isolation and inaction. Truly ambitious people look for a life line in this situation that is not always self-inflicted. However not taking any action at all cannot be blamed on circumstances but on the own inability to act and look for betterment.

Even in the face of adversity, Emy maintained a positive attitude. She saw challenges as opportunities for growth, and her optimism was infectious. This resilience and positivity made her a favored candidate for international roles, where adaptability and a sunny outlook were crucial. This is a testament to the power of a positive mindset and the resilience to bounce back from setbacks that will occur in everyone’s career path.
Claudia’s attitude grew increasingly hostile. She viewed challenges as insurmountable obstacles, often complaining rather than seeking solutions. Her pessimism alienated colleagues and dampened team morale. The bright spark she once had was dimmed, much like Mr. Grayson’s demeanor.

Emy’s vision – on the other side- extended far beyond the horizon. She dreamed of running her boutique hotel, and every action aligned with this vision. Her international experience in Paris enriched her resume, broadening her horizons and bringing her closer to her ultimate goal.
Claudia, too, dreamed, but without a strategic plan she simply lost directions and her aspirations remained distant fantasies. Her daily actions didn’t align with her dreams; without a plan, they never materialized. Mr. Grayson’s toxicity became an excuse, a barrier she didn’t overcome.
Within a few years, Emy’s star continued to rise. She achieved her goal of becoming a department manager within three years and ascended further, her ambition and motivation leading her to a promising future. Her international experience and network made her a sought-after professional, making her dream of global success a reality. She maintained solid contact with her mentor, who was assisting her in the decision making process but also guided her to potentially promising new opportunities. Claudia, however, remained in the same position, her potential unfulfilled. Her lack of motivation and ambition kept her stationary, and her dream of working internationally was never realized. Unfortunately, the toxic environment that Emy navigated with skill had ensnared Claudia, leaving her to watch as Emy soared.

Reflect on your own journey. Are you a Emy or a Claudia? Are you actively pursuing your dreams with clear, written goals, or are you letting opportunities pass? What is holding you back? Is it a lack of opportunities or is it simply a lack of direction? .Are you more like Emy or Claudia? Are you actively pursuing your dreams with clear, written goals or are you allowing opportunities to slip by? What’s holding you back? Is it a lack of motivation, direction, or fear of failure? It’s time to be brutally honest with yourself. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
