Why is a career plan so crucial in the hotel industry? This simple question holds the key to your future success. Few individuals start their careers with a clear vision of their destination. Many talented professionals, including those in hotel schools, apprenticeships, or early roles, such as cooks, front office managers, or sales managers, often lack a well-defined goal.
Reflecting on my journey from a CEO to a Hotel General Manager and a Regional Director, I recall numerous conversations with ambitious colleagues who lacked a clear roadmap. They were eager to climb the ladder but were directionless. In my early years, I was in the same boat. However, the distinguishing factor between those who ascend rapidly and those who don’t is the presence of a plan and a mentor. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring many hoteliers who have risen to become regional directors, COOs, and even a CEO at a significant Asian hotel company.
Early in their careers, most professionals focus on securing a job and earning their first paycheck. However, the ones who stand out, the 10% who achieve their goals faster and secure better salaries, are those who strategically plan their journey from day one. They equip themselves with the right tools and apply them with precision. But what they all had in common, beyond their determination, was a mentor to guide them. I’ve been that mentor for many, and the relationships I’ve built with these professionals endure to this day.
Think of your career as a journey. You wouldn’t head to a train station or airport, buy a random ticket, and hope to end up somewhere meaningful, would you? No. You’d carefully plan where you want to go, why you want to go there, and how you’ll get there. Or, imagine cooking a meal. You wouldn’t rush into a supermarket, buy random ingredients, and hope to create something tasty. You’d decide what you want to cook, gather the right ingredients, and follow a recipe to ensure success.
Consider this: a meal may last only 20 minutes, but your career spans decades. It requires careful planning and the right tools to reach your ultimate goal. Yet, many young professionals don’t have a clear vision for their future. They may know they want to succeed but are unsure how to get there. That’s where “The Career Hotelier” comes in. I created this platform to coach and mentor hoteliers like you—those who are serious about their careers and aspire to become hotel general managers or even more.In my book, The Perfect Hotel Career, I lay out a master plan for success based not on academic theories but on real-life experiences. It’s a practical guide designed to help you map out your career from start to finish. Developing a career plan is not only crucial; it can be enjoyable. It starts with understanding what you want and removing the mental barriers that hold so many people back. Phrases like “I can’t” or “It’s impossible” are common, but they’re nothing more than limiting beliefs.
The hotel industry has opportunities for those ambitious enough to seize them. I started out as a dishwasher and eventually became the CEO of a prominent hotel company. It took time, but two key factors made all the difference: setting clear goals and overcoming limiting beliefs. Overcoming these beliefs is not just a hurdle, it’s a transformative process that can inspire you to reach new heights in your career. Early in my career, I had the ambition rather than the plan. Everything changed when I finally developed a well-thought-out strategy and gained mentors who believed in me. Without mentors and a plan, reaching your goal will take much longer—and some people never get there. That’s why I founded The Career Hotelier. My goal is to help aspiring hoteliers create a solid career plan, whether just starting or already in middle management. With the right ingredients—strategic planning, coaching, and mentorship—you can achieve success faster and enjoy a more rewarding career.
